The Student National Medical Association (SNMA) was founded in 1964 to support medical students of color during their development as future physicians. From its beginning, SNMA played a major role in increasing minority enrollment in medical schools across the nation. We continue this commitment today through mentoring programs for students at several levels of education, from elementary school through college. We additionally focus on the support of medical students from diverse backgrounds, the transformation of medical education into one that is more culturally effective for our nation's diverse population, and outreach to communities with limited access to quality healthcare. Our ultimate purpose is to supply exceptional medical care to multicultural patients, primarily through the support and encouragement of a culturally educated medical team.
Some of the undergraduate students we mentor are part of a student organization called the Minority Association for Pre-Health Students. Each year, our region (Region III; Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas) holds a MAPS Conference to give pre-health students the tools they need to successfully matriculate into the health professional school of their choice. Additionally, we want to inspire these students to take responsibility for the health and welfare of their own communities and to realize that their progress and improvement lies in none other but themselves. [Note: This conference is not limited to students from ethnic or cultural minorities; all students interested in diversity education, the promotion of a culturally-educated healthcare system, and information about different healthcare fields and their admissions process are encouraged to attend!]
The theme of this year’s Conference is “Health and Diversity: Empowering Future Health Professionals to Realize Their Potential for Success.”
